Welcome to the research hub of the Department of Biology at Adıyaman University. We are a dynamic department dedicated to advancing the frontiers of life sciences through dedicated research and high-level academic training.
We actively welcome applications from prospective Master's (MSc), Doctoral (PhD), and Postdoctoral researchers from around the world. We also seek national and international research collaborations.
Our department has a strong track record of externally funded projects, including those supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), and our faculty members are leaders in their respective fields.
Prospective students and collaborators are encouraged to contact faculty members directly to discuss research opportunities. Our main research areas are exemplified by the expertise of our academic staff:
Area of Expertise: Medical Bacteriology and Molecular Virology.
Research Focus: Molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in pathogens such as Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC carbapenemases) and ESBL-producing E. coli; antiviral (HCV) drug discovery research.
Prof. Dr. Eyyüp Rencüzoğulları
Area of Expertise: Genotoxicity and Cytogenetics.
Research Focus: Investigation of the mutagenic and teratogenic effects of pesticides, food additives, and chemicals on human lymphocytes and animal models using chromosomal aberration and micronucleus assays.
Area of Expertise: Biochemistry, Diabetes, and Lipid Metabolism.
Research Focus: Effects of medicinal plant extracts (e.g., Cyclotrichium niveum) and antioxidants (resveratrol, lipoic acid) on biochemical parameters, fatty acid composition, and lipophilic vitamins in diabetic and non-alcoholic fatty liver models.
Prof. Dr. Muhsin Aydın (Erasmus+ & International Coordinator)
Area of Expertise: Molecular Microbiology and Food Safety.
Research Focus: Rapid detection of foodborne pathogens (e.g., Salmonella) using molecular detection systems (e.g., bead-based suspension arrays); characterization of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms (ESBL, KPC).
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Coşkun (Head of Department)
Area of Expertise: Ecotoxicology and Insect Biochemistry.
Research Focus: Using the Galleria mellonella model organism to study the effects of insecticides, heavy metals, and nanomaterials on antioxidant defense systems, lipid peroxidation, and immune biomarkers.
Area of Expertise: Aquatic Toxicology and Fish Physiology.
Research Focus: Assessing the effects of heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Hg), pesticides, and nanoparticles (TiO2) on oxidative stress biomarkers and biochemical parameters using fish models (Oreochromis niloticus, Cyprinus carpio).
Area of Expertise: Marine Biology, Taxonomy, and Molecular Phylogeny.
Research Focus: Studies on the systematics, zoogeography, and molecular phylogeny (DNA barcoding) of marine Harpacticoida (Copepoda) and other meiobenthic organisms.
Area of Expertise: Ecotoxicology and Insect Physiology.
Research Focus: Investigating biochemical and antioxidant enzyme responses to insecticides such as diazinon, deltamethrin, and thiamethoxam using Galleria mellonella and Pimpla turionellae as model organisms.
Prof. Dr. Yusuf Sevgiler (Vice Head of Department)
Area of Expertise: Aquatic Toxicology and Biochemistry.
Research Focus: Effects of environmental pollutants such as pesticides (e.g., fenthion) on glutathione metabolism, oxidative stress, and enzyme activities
